Panther Server: Is
it ready for the enterprise? by Yuval Kossovsky
Much has been written about the recently released desktop version of Apple
Computer's newest operating system, Mac OS X 10.3, or Panther. I'm one of the
many who think the Panther client software is rock-solid, has tremendous speed
and utility advantages over its predecessor and is generally a better operating
system than Windows XP. (Computerworld 11/12/03)

Attacks on New Windows Flaws Expected Soon
Companies will have even less time than usual to properly protect themselves
against attackers attempting to take advantage of three critical flaws in
Windows software that were revealed last week by Microsoft Corp.
Because the flaws are nearly identical to the one that the Blaster worm exploited
last month, users can expect to see copycat attacks in the very near future,
according to several security experts. As a result, it's important for companies
to patch their systems or otherwise protect themselves against the flaws as
expeditiously as possible, they said. Read
all about flaws on Computerworld web site. (ComputerWorld 9/15/03)

Great news for Apple regarding FireWire and QuickTime
Friday, December 20, 2002
There's been some pretty exciting news regarding QuickTime and FireWire this
week. Both QuickTime and FireWire are Apple invented technologies, not just
adopted by Apple.
The DVD Forum who's job it is to regulate anything and everything to do with
DVD discs has formally adopted FireWire as the way to transfer DVD Audio between
audio devices such as Amplifiers and so forth. The source story for this can
be found at the Audio
Revolution web site. The article goes into quite some detail and will be
an exciting read for audiophiles and Mac users alike.
The other news relating to QuickTime will be a revenue maker, the FireWire
deal won't though. Japan's leading wireless provider with over 44 milion subscribers,
DoCoMo, has decided upon QuickTime as the media platform for all its video
phone requirements. This is a major coupe for Apple and you should expect other
wireless providers to also choose QuickTime. This
source story is here.
Nine lives for Mac OS 9
By Joe Wilcox , Staff Writer, CNET News.com
December 13, 2002, 2:39 PM PT
Apple Computer has pulled back from a plan that would have made Mac OS X the
primary operating system on all new Macs starting in January.
In September, the Cupertino, Calif.-based company said that after the New Year,
new Macs would only boot up into Mac OS X. Older models had the capability
of booting into Mac OS X or the older OS 9.2. New systems would still ship
with OS 9.2--to support the "Classic" mode for older software--but
it could only be accessed through OS X.
However, Apple said Friday that it will continue to sell schools some Macs
capable of booting up into Mac OS 9, and will continue to sell a Power Mac
G4 geared toward professionals such as graphic designers until June. Read

Apple Store Visit by Kevin Warrene
Saturday, December 7th was our trip to the Apple store at Easton Town Center
in Columbus. I believe there was 13 of us in attendance. We listened intently
to a brief presentation on new Bluetooth wireless technology and Apple's
Rendezvous technology from one of the helpful staff. I purchased a new digital
camera (Canon PowerShot S230) wih some ammenities, the new OS X Missing Manual
2nd Edition book and a great piece of educational software for my daughter,
Adventure Workshop. I had a problem resolved at the Genious Bar with a conflict
with an older version of Norton Utilities 5.03 and OS X. All in all I think
everyone had a good time and hopefully we will plan another trip in the future.
I
have posted a review of the camera and
related software to the web site in Adobe PDF format. If you don't
have Acrobat Reader please download it from Adobe. It's free.
