Wal-mart won't print your photos if they look too good. They might violate the copyright of a professional photographer.....
Apparently, photofinishers generally have reacted to a suit against Kmart a few years ago, that Kmart felt it had to settle for $100,000. Ultimately a product of overly expansive secondary liability rules, it seems to me. Why should the photographers be able to get damages from the printer instead of having to go after the individuals who order the photos from the photofinisher?

Phillip Torrone kicks the tires on the iPod photo connector. The iPod photo connector is a neat little accessory that you plug in to your iPod photo and to your supported camera; it can transfer all the photos off your camera and to the iPod, giving you 40/60 gigs of storage. The connector charges the shuffle and you can make a super-cheap DIY version of the Belkin media reader, too.

========== ONLINE SAFETY - DEALING WITH PHARMING ==========
Online Crime: Pharming
The latest online crime wave has pushed the U.S. House to a near unanimous rally (395 Ayes, 1 Nays) against internet criminals -- passing H.R. 744 "I-SPY" bill. The bill is now in Senate and needs your support to made it law.
The Internet Spyware (I-SPY) Prevention Act of 2005, introduced by Bob Goodlatte (R VA) addresses the most egregious activities that are conducted via spyware and makes those activities criminal offenses. The legislation also authorizes $10 million to the Department of Justice to combat spyware, pharming and phishing scams.
Remember, the Can-Spam Act passed last year, but for all general purposes it's been ineffective because there's been no enforcement due to lack of funding.
At the urging of so many constituents, Goodlatte's H.R. 744 actually becomes the first ever to actually fund the law's enforcement.
See: "Goodlatte" http://www.house.gov/goodlatte/spyware.htm
We urge you to get out and alert your members to contact their representatives to support and pass H.R. 744.

This brief article explains the new threat of "Pharming" to computer users and provides links to full articles on how to protect yourself. You need to get this vital info to your members:

========== OS X TIP OF THE MONTH - DASHBOARD WIDGETS ==========
Dashboard is a new environment that allows users to run mini-applications called widgets . These widgets, while able to use all of the advanced features of Tiger, are simple to use and simple to develop. This is the first in a series of two articles that gives an introduction to developing Dashboard widgets. This article will focus on the basics of widget development and then go over the steps required to develop a widget that displays *nix man pages. Build a dashboard widget:

========== MAC SOFTWARE SPOTLIGHT - KINEMAC ==========
Kinemac is a 3D Real Time Animation & Presentation Software for Mac OS X. It allows you to create your own professional 3D Animations with the simplicity of a 2D presentation tool.
Kinemac plays the animations in real time at full screen and export them to QuickTime movie files or to a series of single still images. For this reason it's the ideal application to create Advertising for TV, trailers for movies, video-clips, instant scrolling messaging to put "on air" in real time, video content for CD, DVD, web sites... Also it exports your animations as RSS3D format which you can deliver automatically to your client's screen by our interactive screensaver NewsTrailer in order to promote your products as cd, dvd, or to sell mp3 songs or tickets for concerts...
Kinemac is very easy to use. Just drag your images, text, movies and songs onto the Kinemac stage to get them into your animation. Also you can quickly call a menu and create 3D and 2D objects such as cubes, cylinders, spheres, tubes, pies, rectangles, disks... On any object you can apply image and movie textures and set the surfaces attributes such as color, transparency, reflection...

========== CONFERENCE UPDATE - ADHOC IN DETROIT ==========
I'm sending this message to announce this year's iteration of ADHOC, the Apple-focused Advanced Developers Hands On Conference . I'm pretty certain there are Macintosh developers hidden in most Macintosh user groups, and we're looking for developers who are experts at everything from kernel hacking & driver development to novices just figuring out the basics of Cocoa.
ADHOC (a.k.a. MacHack) has been going for 20 years now, and this year it will be happening from July 27th through July 31st out in Dearborn, Michigan (on a pleasant boundry of Detroit). While it's a great companion to WWDC (we usually schedule a month or two after Apple's conference), it's also a perfect standalone conference to attend as you'll actually get to listen to and interact with other engineers who are actually using the latest & greatest cutting edge technology and techniques.
A typical day goes like this: It all starts at midnight with an awesome keynote speaker, or you could be collaborating (it's a Hands-On conference, after all!) with a peer on some sick/twisted/great project to show off at the showcase. During the daylight hours there are sessions that focus on things like open source software, how to make use of the latest technologies that will be delivered with TIger, debugging and optimization techniques. You name it, we may have a session on it.
And since this is a conference by developers, for developers, we need developer interaction. If you're working on something you'd like to share with your fellow engineers, or if you have a topic that you think needs to be explored more and you can talk about it, present a session! Here's a web page that talks about how to get involved: http://www.adhocconference.com/sessions.
We also have a contest for best technical papers, and folks who write and present a paper (to be judged by their peers) get to attend for free! (more info and past papers can be found at http://www.adhocconference.com/Papers.
Check out the conference website at http://www.adhocconference.com and please share this with your user group membership. We can only continue to be a success only with your help!
Thanks so much,
Michael Dautermann
Publicity Chair
