========== OS X TIP OF THE MONTH ==========
Securing Back-Up Data with an Encrypted Disk Image
To create an encrypted disk image follow these steps:
1. Open Disk Copy (/Applications/Utilities/).
2. Choose New from the File menu, then Blank Image from the submenu.
3. Enter a name in the Save As field. This name is used for the disk image
(.dmg) file.
4. Note the location specified in the Where pop-up menu. If you want to save
the image file in a different location, you may change it.
5. Enter a name in the Volume Name field. It may be the same as or different
from the file name. This is name that appears for the volume when you open,
or "mount," the disk image file with Disk Copy.
6. Select a size for the image file
7. Choose a format for the volume.
8. Choose AES-128 from the Encryption pop-up menu.
9. Click the Create button.
10. Enter and verify your password in the New Passphrase dialog. It may be
from 1 to 255 characters in length (see Note).
11. Click OK.
12. You can now drag this disk image to a CD to back-up. The CD can be
accessed but to open the disk image you will need the password.
Note: By default, this password will be saved in your keychain. You may
elect not to by deselecting the checkbox for "Remember password". You
should
store the password in the keychain both for convenience and for reducing
risk of password loss. If the keychain is locked, you will be asked to
supply the password for the keychain when the disk image password is needed.
Warning: If you forget the password, the data stored in the encrypted disk
image will be irretrievably lost. If you have saved the password in the
keychain file, it will be available to you there. You should periodically
back up your keychain file.

========== APPLEWORKS 6 TIP ==========
Deleting Recent Items Files
If creating or opening a document in AppleWorks seems unusually slow, try
resetting your Recent Items folder. Overloading your Recent Items folder
could cause AppleWorks 6 to slow down. To speed up AppleWorks, delete your
Recent Items folder. AppleWorks will create a new Recent Items folder for
you.
To delete your Recent Items folder:
1. Quit AppleWorks if it is open.
2. Open your Documents folder.
3. Open the AppleWorks User Data folder.
4. Open the Starting Points folder.
5. Drag the Recent Items folder to the Trash. Your could also just select
all of the files in the folder and move these to the trash.
6. Open AppleWorks. A new, empty Recent Items folder is created.
========== MAC SOFTWARE SPOTLIGHT ==========
Digi-Elements - Bring Sunny Skies to Photoshop
Have you ever wished you could add a cloud to a picture? Add water with
reflections? Wouldn't it be great if you could do all that in Photoshop
without learning 3D modeling?
Aurora 2 is a Photoshop plug-in that adds 3D clouds, skies, sun, moon,
stars, water, and more in Photoshop. Aurora makes creating 3D nature easy
and offers a lot of power.
Normally $179 (US) for the download version, MUG members can get Aurora for
only $135 (US) -- that's 30 percent off. Use the electronic coupon code.
http://www.digi-element.com
This worldwide offer expires March 31, 2004.
*For MUG members ONLY.*
