^^^^^^^^^^ OCTOBER MEETING ^^^^^^^^^^
We will be having our monthly meeting on Saturday, October 4th at the Dover
Public Library at 2:00PM. We will be talking about and reviewing available
magazines, periodicals and books to help you with your Mac. We will also be
taking a brief look at Konfabulator (http://www.konfabulator.com), which is
a JavaScript runtime engine for Mac OS X that lets you run little files
called Widgets that can do pretty much whatever you want them to.

^^^^^^^^^^ APPLE UPDATES .MAC ACCOUNTS ^^^^^^^^^^
Apple has added three new exclusive gifts for .Mac members -- a free copy of
the iBlog weblog software, a free VersionTracker Plus subscription and a
US$30 discount on SmartDisk hard drives. Lifli Software's iBlog (US$19.95
value) lets you easily publish a weblog "without worrying about formatting,
archiving or site maintenance." The software can publish your weblog on your
.Mac homepage and offers integration with Apple's iLife. The VersionTracker
Plus subscription ($24.95 value) gives you a custom page for tracking your
software, a download cart, e-mail alerts, and advanced search to the popular
software Web site. The $30 discount is offered on three SmartDisk FireWire
hard drives (40GB, 80GB and 120GB capacities) from the Apple Store. You can
sign up for a 60-day free trial of the .Mac service at their web site. The
annual cost of a .Mac account is $99.95 and offers a wealth of bells and
whistles.

^^^^^^^^^^ OS X TIP OF THE MONTH ^^^^^^^^^^
Can't empty the trash in OS X?
Have you seen this annoying message? Can't empty the trash because "trash
items are in use". Your Mac seems to think that the item is still open, and
therefore it cannot delete the file.
Possible Causes and Solutions:
1. First, try the obvious. Check to make sure that the offending file really
is closed. If it is, quit out of the application used to create the file,
then empty the trash.
2. If you open your hard drive (Command-N) into Columns View and the file is
" open" in the Preview screen (the column on the far right), the system is
using the file. Take the file out of the trash, close the Preview screen in
the Column View and drag the file to the trash again. Now you can empty the
trash.
3. Some users have reported that waiting awhile, and even trashing another
file, then emptying the trash again. This method sometimes resolves the
problem as well.

^^^^^^^^^^ OS 9 TIP OF THE MONTH ^^^^^^^^^^
Window Shading:
Mac OS 9 allows you to collapse any window to its title bar by clicking the
small rectangle in the top right. This allows you to view the contents
behind the window without having to actually close the window or move it
offside. Fans of this features can simplify its activation by opening the
Appearance control panel, clicking the Options tab, and checking off the
second option which allows you to collapse any window by double-clicking its
title bar.

^^^^^^^^^^ MAC SOFTWARE SPOTLIGHT ^^^^^^^^^^

the following titles:
- 3D Hearts Deluxe (retail box), the number 1 Hearts card game for the Mac.
