Our hearts and prayers go out to all of the victims of Hurricane Katrina.
The devastation in the wake of Hurricane Katrina is heartbreaking, and our thoughts are with those struggling in the aftermath of this disaster. As victims of this natural disaster are attempting to recover, American Red Cross volunteers have been deployed to the hardest hit areas of Katrina's destruction, supplying hundreds of thousands of victims left homeless with critical necessities. By making a financial gift to Hurricane 2005 Relief, the Red Cross can provide shelter, food, counseling and other assistance to those in need. We urge you to contribute to this worthy cause.

Apple® introduced the iPod® nano, a revolutionary full-featured iPod that holds 1,000 songs yet is thinner than a standard #2 pencil and less than half the size of competitive players. The iPod nano features an ultra-portable, lightweight design with a gorgeous color screen, Apple’s patent pending Click Wheel and the ability to hold 1,000 songs or 25,000 photos. iPod nano works seamlessly with the iTunes® Music Store, the world’s number one digital music service. The iPod nano is available immediately in a 4GB model priced at just $249 and a 2GB model priced at just $199, with both models available in stunning white or black designs.   “iPod nano is the biggest revolution since the original iPod,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “iPod nano is a full-featured iPod in an impossibly small size, and it’s going to change the rules for the entire portable music market.”

TidBITS has released "Take Control of Customizing Microsoft Office"; 10% of proceeds donated to Red Cross
Begun last year by author Kirk McElhearn, this ebook was meant to be a quick project that would help readers use the Customize dialog to make custom toolbars, menus, and keyboard shortcuts. We soon discovered a seemingly never-ending trail of nuances and exceptions, especially since the ebook covers both Office X and Office 2004. Motivated by a strong desire to eliminate confusion, we persevered until we had a clear, step-by-step guide to customizing toolbars, menus, and keyboard shortcuts. We also cover AutoCorrect and AutoText, two somewhat similar ways of quickly inserting text into Office documents, and we look at templates for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint - how to set them up, how to use them, and so on. Other topics covered include navigating toolbars via the keyboard, using the Word Work menu, learning where Office stores customizations, and more. An appendix lists 20 favorite Office customizations from a variety of Macintosh experts.
Frankly, this ebook will help any Microsoft Office user work more efficiently, be more proficient with Office, and have more fun. Long ago, editor in chief Tonya Engst did tech support for Microsoft Word, but even she learned new things about Word, Excel, and the other Office programs, and more important, was able to put them to immediate use in the work she does on Take Control manuscripts and accounting.

SpaceWeather.com -- News and information about meteor showers, solar flares, auroras, and near-Earth asteroids.
We're all concerned about the weather down here on earth. Especially those of us who live in "hurricane central". But have you ever considered the weather in the rest of the universe? For instance, did you know that today the solar wind speed is 372.9 kilometers per second (231.7 miles per second)? Did you know that on September 7, 2005 solar flares caused electronic communication problems for emergency personnel in hurricane-hit areas of the U.S. Gulf Coast? Check out this Web site for some interesting facts and figures.

========== HARDWARE SPOTLIGHT - TRANSPOD ==========
The world is full of iPods. That’s a good thing. The world is also full of iPod accessories, and that also is a good thing when they work as promised. Unfortunately, being able to connect something to Apple’s music player and putting an “i” in front of its name does not guarantee a hit. One category that has been consistently disappointing is that of FM transmitters, to facilitate playing your iPod through your car stereo, or even home stereo. I’ve tried them all and every one has left me cold in form, function or both, so it was with a certain amount of skepticism that I eyed the latest entry into the arena, the TransPod for iPod shuffle from Digital Lifestyle Outfitters (DLO) http://www.dlodirect.com/ while at Macworld Boston.
If you’ve been searching for a convenient way to play your iPod shuffle in your car, look no further. Get the review at http://www.mugcenter.com/reviews/transpod.html

========== OS X TIP OF THE MONTH - PAGES - .MAC EMAIL ==========
Working with Pages from Macnexus.
I did the rather complex layout using layering, framing, rotating, opacity levels etc… in Apple's Pages application, then saved them as PDFs, then saved the PDFs as JPEGs so they would load faster.
I did this because the export to HTML service from Pages seemed to be way too complicated for what I wanted & it also would not show the various layers in their "composite" finished state.
Here is what I did:

Your .Mac membership entitles you to use up to five email aliases — names you can create and discard as needed to manage your email correspondence. Creating and using them is simplicity itself.
Sometimes it's useful to have an email address you can discard later if you need or want to — because you're no longer the Little League coach or the club president, for instance, or because you don't want to give your real email address to a site you don't know well enough to trust. They're a snap to set up, use, and remove via the web, and Tiger Mail automatically adds them to the list of "from" Account choices when you're sending
mail. Learn more at http://www.mac.com/1/email_aliases.html

========== MAC SOFTWARE SPOTLIGHT - MACZEALOTS TOP 10 ==========
For those of you who are loyal MacZealots readers, you will remember that last year we ran an article about the Top 10 Shareware applications of 2004 . The article went over so well that we decided to do it again this year. With the release of Tiger there has been a great deal of third-party development recently. Although Macs are great straight out of the box, third-party developers are the glue that holds Apple and its customers together. Developers continue to create freeware and shareware applications that allow Macs to perform at their very best.
I chose this list using the following criteria:
Affordability - no price limit was set, but as you read you will notice that no program cost over $70. This is a great deal, even in the eyes of a poor college student
Variety - no developer had more than one program selected and the selections cover a broad range of user needs
Practicality - in my opinion, all of these applications are useful on a daily basis and don’t require that the user be an uber-geek to find them valuable
Additionally, all of these applications offer free trials. Although that was not a requirement to make the list, it is a nice feature.
Of course, the list we have complied does not include every great piece of software available on the market, but these are 10 that we could not function without. As always, if there is something specific that you are looking for we recommend that you use MacUpdate. MacUpdate has a very comprehensive list of Mac OS X applications and is updated multiple times daily.
